Nixie tubes

Nixies in a Type 230

Nixie tubes are gas filled glow-discharge indicators containing a wire-mesh anode and multiple cathodes that are shaped like numerals or other symbols.

They were used as numeric readout displays before LED displays became ubiquitous in that function.
