The Tektronix RG501 is a ramp generator plug-in for the TM500 system.

It produces a linear ramp signal adjustable up to 10 V amplitude, positive or negative, with a duration from 10 μs to 10 s (equivalent to 1 μs/Div to 1 s/Div on a typical oscilloscope's X scale). Additionally, the RG501 provides a 3 V (TTL compatible) gate signal (high while ramp running).

The ramp can be triggered from an external input, an internal trigger signal (via the backplane), the line frequency, or can be free-running (Auto Trig mode).

A typical application of the RG501 is to sweep a voltage-controlled function generator's frequency, e.g. when used with with the FG501.

Key Specifications

Ramp duration Fixed, 10 μs to 1 s in decade steps, variable multiplier ×1 to (min.) ×10 (i.e. max. 10 s)
Amplitude variable from ~50 mV to 10 V, selectable polarity
Trigger Sensitivity 200 mVp-p, Level ±1 V, input impedance 10 kΩ
Gate output 3 V, 160 Ω source impedance

Internals

The RG501 uses Tek custom ICs 155-0056-00 (sweep control) and 155-0042-03 (Miller integrator).
