The 7T11 is a time base plug-in for the 7000 mainframe family.
It was specially designed to build a sampling oscilloscope configuration together with the 7S11 including one of the sampling heads. The fastest sweep is 10ps/div and lowest jitter is 10ps, depending on actual settings.

Trigger bandwidth is 500MHz from internal and 1 GHz from external trigger sources.
Additionally there is an internal 200MHz oscillator with analog trigger count down,
which can be synchronized from external signals up to 14GHz.

Due its sampling principle (so called undersampling) it can only be used on
repetitive signals and samples are always taken from signal portions delayed
from the trigger event. This delay is adjustable on the front panel to select
the portion of interest. At the three lowest sweep ranges the 7T11 changes
from the undersampling principles to real-time sampling.

Due the high bandwidth of the sampling heads, there is no Y-delay-line in the heads,
so the 7T11 needs an external pre-trigger, if there are random, high jitter signals
or if the original signal triggered onto shall be observed. In the special case of
a periodic signal with low jitter, a random sampling mode can be used,
so that the signal triggered on can be observed. In this case an internal PLL
locks to the signal and generates an internal pre-trigger.
If only bandwidths of up to 3GHz are needed, single events can be observed
directly be using the 7M11 analog delay line plug-in. [This should be
clarified. It seems to imply that a single event can be plotted using a
7T11.]

Manual or external sweep is possible to connect a slow pen plotter.

Because the 7T11 and 7S11 have direct interconnections side by side, they work also in slow mainframes. The 7T11 supports up to two 7S11 and allows also x-y operation up to 14GHz, if one 7S11 resides in the A-horizontal slot.

The 7T11 uses a BSM connector for pulse output on the front panel.

Hello anybody

My native language is german, so close one eye sometimes! ;-)

I had to observe homebrew random and periodic 100pS impulses and so bought old Tek parts because my limited budget allowed not "state of the art" and the low cost caused that somewhat has to be repaired. And so I found this site. Hardest to repair was the 7T11, a tunnel diode did randomly "shut down" and pick off a replacement was a hard job too. :-)

Have fun with Tek and HP and never give up!
GHzhttps://w140.com/tekwiki/index.php?title=Connectors&diff=4087Connectors2011-08-14T12:10:08Z
GHz: /* GR-874 */

Tektronix equipment makes use of a wide variety of connectors.
Most of the connectors were standard parts when the instruments were designed.
Occasionally custom connectors were designed. What follows is a partial list of connectors
used in Tektronix equipment.

BNC
BNC is the most common connector for measurement equipment up to 1GHz.
It was patented in 1951 by Hazeltine Research, Inc.
It is available in different impedances. 50-ohm is the most common.
Tektronix gear transitioned from UHF connectors to BNC connectors in
the early to mid-1960's. For some pieces of equipment, a conversion kit was
available.

* BNC Connector Patent (PDF)

SMA
SMA connectors are good to about 20GHz. The male connectors have a protruding center
pin and ground shroud that screws on. They are similar to UHF connectors, but much smaller
and with much tighter tolerances and better controlled impedance. The female is threaded
on the outside.

SMB
SMB connectors are small snap-on RF connectors developed in the 1960's.
They come in 50-ohm and 75-ohm variants. Their RF performance in somewhat
inferior to SMA connectors, but they are more compact and have the convenience
of being snap-on instead of having a screw-on grounding nut.

GR-874
The GR-874 is a hermaphroditic RF connector developed by General Radio in the
late 1940's. They are typically 50 ohms, but other impedances were available
using the same ground shield and housing, but different center pin geometry.
The Tektronix 519 uses a 125-ohm GR-874 connector which has a much thinner
center pin. The regular 50-ohm version is used in the 1S1, 1S2,
3S1, 3S7, 3T7, 4S1, 4S2, 5T1, 5T1A, 5T3, 7M11, N, S1, S2,
106, 109, 113, 280, 281, 282, and 282.

Peltola
The Tektronix website says the following about Peltola connectors:

The Peltola connector was developed for in-house use by Tektronix (and developed by Ron Peltola).
However, the pieces to make the connector are these:

The Male coaxial connector consists of the RG-174 coax center conductor as the male pin, with the braided shield pressed between two eyelets, part number 210-0775-00 (smaller one) and part number 210-0774-00 (larger one). The outer eyelet is then "dimpled" to secure the eyelet-shield-eyelet combination.

The Female (circuit board mounted) connector consists of 2 pieces. In the center is the socket pin connector, part number 136-0252-07 and the connector recepticle (with 3 circuit board mounting tabs), part number 131-1003-00.

UHF
The UHF connector is basically a banana connector with a screw-on shield.
The male is often called a PL-259, and the female is often called an SO-239. Although it is
called a "UHF" connector, the connector's construction does does not provide a standard controlled
impedance, so it typically used up to 300 MHz, at most. The design has been used since the 1930's,
and it is used on many pieces of early Tektronix gear. Tek moved away from them in the mid-1960's.
Tek provided kits that allowed owners or field technicians to convert instruments from UHF connectors
to BNC connectors, which are smaller, quicker to attach and remove, and have better
high-frequency characteristics (controlled impedance).

The UHF connector is used in the 511, 512, 514, 517, 524, 525, 526,
531, 533, 535, 541, 543, 545, 555, 575, 127, 1121,
A, B, C, D, G, H, K, L, R, S, T, Z, 2A60,
60, 63, 72, 75, and 360.

Banana
According to Wikipedia, the banana connector was invented in 1924 by Richard Hirschmann.
The male (plug) is a 4mm shaft that has a springy shroud so it fits snugly in the female (socket),
which is a 4mm hole. In American equipment, when banana plugs are used in pairs (e.g., power and ground),
it is customary to place the two banana connectors 3/4" apart. Although the 3/4" spacing is a de facto
standard in America, it is problematic in Europe, where a 3/4" double banana plug can easily be inserted
into a wall (mains) power receptacle by accident.

N
According to Wikipedia, the N connector was invented in the 1940s by Paul Neill of Bell Labs.
The N connector is good to at least 10GHz. It is seen as the input connector for Tektronix
spectrum analyzers 1L20, 1L30, 1L40, and 492.

BSM
Several Tektronix products use BSM connectors, such as the 7T11, 11B2, 3S2, S-50. S-51, and S-52.
These look like minature BNC connectors. They are much less common than BNC connectors. There are two-lug variants
and three-lug variants. Tektronix used the two-lug variant. They are also sometimes called MB connectors.
The 067-0587-01 uses one for TRIG OUT.
IEC
Lemo S-series
Octal
In some Tektronix equipment such as the 160 series, an octal connector is used. The plug resembles the bottom of a
tube like a 6L6. The socket is an octal tube socket. The 160 power supply has octal sockets on the back, and octal cables
bring the power to the modules such as the 161, 162, 163, and 360.
XLR
The XLR connector is most often used as a connector for microphone cables. It is used in the Tektronix Type E.
GHzhttps://w140.com/tekwiki/index.php?title=S-6&diff=2254S-62010-12-13T13:42:05Z
GHz: Example of a sampled signal.

7S14 is a Dual Trace Delayed Sweep Sampler Plugin.

It combines a two channel sampler and is kompatible to any 7000-Mainframe and forms them to a 1GHz oszilloscope. There are button-batterie cells, acting as floating bias sources inside the sampling circuit, so the unit stopps working, it may be not defective, just check at first the voltage on the cells! There is also a integrated delay measurement function. Allowed input voltage range is only 5Vpk.

*Risetime = 350 ps (This means 1 GHz bandwith)
*Vertical deflection 2mV/DIV to 0.5V/DIV in 1,2,5 sequence
*Time base deflection factor 100 µs/DIV to 100 ps/DIV in 1,2,5 sequence
*delayed timebase
*50 ohms input
GHzhttps://w140.com/tekwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=2017Main Page2010-11-07T18:21:39Z
GHz: /* Plug-ins */

The S6 sampling plug-in head is a 50 ohm feedthrough unit with a rise-time of 30ps and bandwidth of 11.5GHz. The S6 provides two unterminated 50-ohm SMA connections in a loop-through configuration. The S6 is specified for less than 5mV of noise. Note, that the unit provides no internal trigger pickoff signal for internal triggering! There is no internal termination, allways use a termination on the unit to give a minimum protection against electrostatic discharge at handling. It was introduced in 1971.

The S-4 was designed by George Frye and introduced in 1968. The S4 sampling plug-in head provides one 50-ohm SMA input port with a 25ps risetime and a bandwidth of 14.5GHz. The unit provides a trigger pickoff signal for internal triggering and is specified for less than 5mV of noise. The S4 is the fastest of the S-series plug-in samplers. A interesting comparison of different sampling heads is found in "AN-3042a, Revision 1, 2/89".

The S4 sampling gate is based upon a traveling wave trapped-charge transmission line in which the sampling window is set by the propagation time of pulse edge through a thick-film transmission line. This technique requires only a sharp pulse edge rather than a precise pulse width, which is harder to generate.
The sampling diodes are housed in a special coaxial connector that provides a high bandwidth signal path.

The Tektronix 7S11 is a sampling plug-in for 7000-series scopes. It takes one sampling head,
such as the S1, S2, S3, S4, S5 or S6 to form a complete vertical plugin. The bandwidth and sensitivity is determined by the sampling head, not the plug-in.

For operation a 7T11 plugin is needed.

7T11 is a time base plugin for the 7000 mainframe family. It was specialy designed to build a sampling scope configuration together with the 7S11 including one of the sampling heads. Fastest sweep is 10pS/div and lowest jitter is 10pS, depending on actual settings.

Trigger bandwith is 500MHz at internal and 1 GHz at external trigger sources. Additional there is an internal 200MHz oscillator with analog trigger count down, which can be synchronized from external signals up to 14GHz.

Due its sampling principle ( so called undersampling ) it can only be used on periodic signals and samples are allways taken from signal portions delayed from the trigger event. This delay is adjustable on the frontpanel to select the portion of interest. At the three lowest sweep ranges the 7T11 changes from the undersampling principles to realtime sampling.

Due the high bandwith of the sampling heads, there is no Y-delay-line in the heads, so the 7T11 needs an external pretrigger, if there are random, high jitter signals or if the original signal triggered onto shall be observed. In the special case of a periodic signal with low jitter, a so called random trigger mode can be used, so that the signal triggered on can be observed. In this case a internal PLL locks to the signal and generates a internal pretrigger. If only bandwiths of up to 3GHz are needed, single events can be observed directly be using the 7M11 analog delay line plugin.

Manual or external sweep is possible to connect a slow pen plotter.

Because the 7T11 and 7S11 have direct interconnections side by side, they work also in slow mainframes. The 7T11 supports up to two 7S11 and allows also xy-operation.
