The Tektronix Type 106 is a squarewave generator introduced in 1966. It has four outputs:

  • Fast Rise +Output: 500mV into 50 ohm load, positive-going pulse, 1ns risetime, 50-ohm output impedance, GR connector
  • Fast Rise -Output: 500mV into 50 ohm load, negative-going pulse, 1ns risetime, 50-ohm output impedance, GR connector
  • High Amplitude Output: 12V into 50 ohm load, 12ns-risetime, 600-ohm output impedance, GR connector
  • Trigger Output: 100mV into 50 ohm load, 50ns risetime, 150 ohm output impedance, BNC connector

The 1ns-risetime outputs are generated using diodes to clip a high amplitude signal. In units with serial numbers less than 1190, GaAs diodes were used for clipping. After serial number 1190, silicon diodes were used.

The high amplitude output stage of the 106 is made of four 7189A tubes in parallel. With moderate effort, the socket wiring can be made compatible with the 7189 aka 6BQ5.
