Gale Morris in 1987 (TekWeek May 11)

Gale Preston Morris (b. 1935-05-31 in Berkeley, CA – d. 2023-03-10) attended high school in Portland, OR before receiving a bachelor's degree in industrial design from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1958. The same year he joined Tektronix as the company's first industrial designer, and established Tek's industrial design department.

His initial responsibility was the design of Tek's instrument carts, e.g., the Type 202.

According to Morris' 2017 account (The history of the Tektronix 453 Oscilloscope @ YouTube), the 453, which was introduced in 1965, was the first Tek scope where industrial designers were "fully engrossed" in the design. The success of that instrument – IBM purchased a significant quantity based on the usability – led to this becoming the norm at Tek.
