The Intel 80286 is a 16-bit microprocessor monolithic integrated circuit introduced in 1982. Initially offered speeds were 5, 6 or 8 MHz, later versions up to 25 MHz. The 80286 was the CPU in the IBM PC AT.
It expands the architecture of the earlier Intel 8086 to introduce memory management with physical address space up to 16 MB and "protected mode" intended to support multitasking operating systems, albeit retaining the limitation of 64 KB segments.
Floating-point operations were implemented in the optional Intel 80287 coprocessor.
