Tektronix, Inc. (→ WikiData) (short: "Tek") is an American company best known for manufacturing test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and video and mobile test protocol equipment.
History
In late summer 1945, C. Howard Vollum. Melvin J. "Jack" Murdock, Miles Tippery and (later) accountant Glenn McDowell decided to found a company to produce their first oscilloscope. It incorporated on January 2, 1946 as Tekrad but after a short time changed its name to Tektronix (a name suggested by Tippery). The company was headquartered in Portland, Oregon, before moving to Beaverton, Oregon in 1956.
The IPO was in 1963.
By 1974, Tektronix employed over 11,500 staff[1]. Around this time, they became Oregon's largest employer, growing to more than 24,000 employees in 1981, but shrinking to 12,000 by the end of 1991.[2]
The company joined the Fortune 500 (at 457th) in 1975, with $336.6 million in sales[2], and passed the $1 billion mark in sales in 1981.
However, between 1979 and 1984, earnings fell more than 40 percent, and reported its first-ever loss (of $16.7 million) for fiscal 1988[2].
Acquisition
In November 2007, Danaher Corporation acquired Tektronix as a subsidiary for $38 cash per share, which equated to a valuation of approximately $2.8 billion.
Tektronix is now a subsidiary of Fortive, a spinoff from Danaher Corporation.
