The Intersil ICM7226  (P/N 156-1655-00) is an 8-decade counter and 7-segment driver monolithic integrated circuit.

The ICM7226 combines an oscillator, a decade timebase counter, an 8-decade data counter and latches, a 7-segment decoder, digit multiplexer and segment and digit drivers which can directly drive LED displays. It also has digit-serial BCD outputs.

It can function as a frequency counter, period counter, frequency ratio counter, time interval counter, or as a totalizing counter. The ICM7226 and the ICM7216 (which is similar but without BCD outputs) was used in numerous simple 1970s/1980s frequency counters, including DIY projects.

Key Specifications

Count frequency Max. 10 MHz

There are two variants, ICM7226A for common anode displays (≤25 mA per segment), and ICM7226B (156-1665-00) for common cathode displays (≤12 mA per segment). They have different pin-out.
