This system was a Spectrum Surveillance system used by spooks to monitor and intercept RF emissions back in the good ol' Cold War days. The unit in question is early '70's vintage. You could sweep 1-1000 MHz and stare at the screen to see what was popping up, then narrow the span to "home in" in on the emitter, finally switching to a manual fixed tune mode and actually demodulate and listen to the offending signal to see if it was a "bug" or some other undesirable covert emitter.
