Forsberg obtained an M.S. degree in Electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1968. He joined Tektronix in 1968.

He is widely known for developing the popular serial file transmission protocols YMODEM and ZMODEM.

Forsberg founded Omen Technology in 1984.
