The Tektronix 4551 is a light pen system. When used in any 525/60 or 625/50 line TV system, it produces a cursor overlaid on the TV image that tracks the position of a pen as the user moves it across the TV screen.

It is also designed to interface directly with a 4501 scan converter in a configuration enabling the user to "write" on the image. When the user presses the pen against the display, a switch in the pen tip activates the write function, converting pen movements to stored images on the 4501. The 4501 scanned the stored image and produces an NTSC output.
