The Tektronix 286 is a multiplexer introduced in 1970 for S-series sampling heads.
It is useful in situations where the number of signals that need to be measured is more than the number of inputs channels on the oscilloscope being used.
The 286 fits in the 287 enclosure, but since it contains its own linear regulated supply, it can also operate as a freestanding unit without a 287, if desired.
