The Tektronix Type 106 is a square-wave generator introduced in 1966, designed by Bill Lukens. It has four outputs:

  • Fast Rise +Output: 500 mV into 50 Ω load, positive-going pulse, 1 ns rise time, 50 Ω output impedance, GR-874 connector
  • Fast Rise −Output: 500 mV into 50 Ω load, negative-going pulse, 1 ns rise time, 50 Ω output impedance, GR-874 connector
  • High Amplitude Output: 0.5–12 V into 50 Ω load / 7–120 V unterminated, 12 ns rise time into 50 Ω load / 120 ns unterminated, 600 Ω output impedance, 240 mA max., GR-874 connector
  • Trigger Output: 100 mV into 50 Ω load, 50 ns rise time, 150 Ω output impedance, BNC connector

Internals

The 1 ns rise-time outputs are generated using diodes to clip a high amplitude signal. In units with serial numbers less than 1190, GaAs diodes were used for clipping. After serial number 1190, silicon diodes were used.

The high-amplitude output stage of the 106 is made of four 7189A tubes in parallel. With moderate effort, the socket wiring can be made compatible with the 7189 and 6BQ5 (EL84).
