836
The Tektronix 836 is a portable "programmable data communications tester" (serial protocol analyzer).
It adds a multiple string trigger function on top of the capabilities of sister models 834 and 835. Compared to the 835, it has an extra Zilog Z-8 microprocessor that, according to the manual, processes data in parallel with Z80 CPU processing at baud rates above 19.2 kbit/s.
The manual says:
The 835 and 836 Data Communications Analyzers are portable instruments used for monitoring, analyzing, testing and troubleshooting data communications interfaces that conform to EIA standard RS-232-C or CCITT V.24. The Option 04 version permits testing of the MIL-STD 188-C interface as well.
The 835/ 836 can operate as:
- A serial data transmission monitor
- A Data Communications Equipment (DCE) or modem simulator for testing data terminal equipment
- A Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) simulator for testing data communications equipment
- A Bit and Block Error Rate Tester (BERT)
The 835/836 offers baud rate settings ranging from 50 to 144,000 bits / second (above 19,200 on 836 only), buffer storage capacity of 4451 characters, a 16 - character alphanumeric display and easy-to-use keyboard.
The lead software engineer and project manager for the 836 was Bill Randle. The 836 was developed in Redmond. Others on the project were Ken Spencer (software), Dennis Holmbo (hardware) and Andy ? (custom ASIC).
